Animal Welfare Education - Teaching Compassion in our Community.

Our Society advocates that preventing cruelty and promoting kindness towards animals can be achieved through formal and informal educational activities. Every act of cruelty prevented begins with understanding, because cruelty isn’t instinctive, it’s learned. And so is kindness.

Humane education programmes are initiatives that teach children and community members about animal welfare, responsible pet ownership and the importance of empathy and compassion.

Our goal - to teach how to interact safely and respectfully with animals, understand the needs and emotions of pets and encourage children to report cruelty, neglect or injury. These lessons don’t just stay in the classroom—they create ripple effects in families and communities.

Why this Matters

Research shows that children who participate in humane education programmes are more likely to develop prosocial behaviors, such as cooperation, sharing, and empathy. Humane education also helps reduce incidents of animal cruelty and neglect. When children understand that animals are sentient beings who feel pain and joy, they are less likely to engage in or tolerate cruelty. These programmes lay the groundwork for lifelong compassion, responsibility, and ethical decision-making.

Our Programmes include school visits, tours of the Randburg SPCA facilities, and community workshops. These programs are tailored for different age groups and focus on teaching kindness, the basics of pet care, and the importance of adoption. By working closely with local educators and community leaders, we ensure that humane education programs reach as many individuals as possible—creating a generation of compassionate and responsible pet owners.
